Italian football manager Pasquale Marino is finding it difficult to wrap his head around the situation involving Davide Frattesi and Inter Milan.
The 25-year-old joined the Nerazzurri in the summer of 2023 as one of the best-rising midfielders in Serie A. However, he has yet to cement himself a starting spot at Simone Inzaghi’s court due to the vast competition in the middle of the park.
After all, Inter boast one of the best midfield units in Europe. It includes the likes of Nicolo Barella, Hakan Calhanolgu and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. This star-studded department is one of the main reasons why the club is considered the favourite in the Scudetto race, and one of the potential runners for the Champions League trophy according to some of the most reputable bookmakers online, like football betting Vulkan bet.
However, Inter’s splendid starting trio is leaving Frattesi starving for playing time. While this was also the case last season, at least he was always the first midfielder off the bench.
The Italian came to the Nerazzurri’s rescue several times following his entry in the second half last term. This includes an unforgettable winner against Hellas Verona. Many still consider that strike as one of the key moments on the road towards the second star.
But while the former Sassuolo was eager to find more room this season, it has been quite the opposite, especially with Piotr Zielinski joining the fray. With the Poland international, the competition for starting spots further increased.
Hence, the Roman is not even the first choice off the bench on some occasions, much to Marino’s surprise.
The 62-year-old oversaw the player’s development when he was on loan at Empoli in the 2019/20 campaign. He had expected his old pupil to be in a much better situation at this stage of his career.
“I had Frattesi at Empoli, and in a few games, he became very important,” said Marino in his interview with Radio Kiss Kiss via FcInterNews.
“We won the derby against Pisa and he always arrives on time in the insertions. For a three-man midfield, he is fundamental.
“It is strange today though that at Inter he is no longer the first alternative. The other night Zielinski came in as the first substitution.”
Frattesi’s current status has reportedly alarmed AS Roma who are trying to lure him back to the Italian capital.
