Coventry City have been told they are making a great signing in Romain Esse, with the attacker set to join Frank Lampard’s side from Crystal Palace on loan for the rest of the season.

The Sky Blues have enjoyed a brilliant campaign so far, but a run of two wins in eight games has seen their lead at the top of the league cut to six points.

Of course, it’s still a great position to be in, although the results have shown a need for Lampard to strengthen the squad in the January window, as despite the talent, there is a lack of depth in the Coventry squad.

Coventry City hailed for 'fantastic' Romain Esse, Crystal Palace transfer deal

To their credit, it seems the recruitment team are wasting little time in providing additions, as it has been reported that Esse is set to sign from Palace.

There was a lot of excitement around the 20-year-old when he came through the ranks at Millwall, with the youngster emerging as one of the top talents in the Championship.

That convinced Palace to bring Esse in from the Lions for an initial £12m last year, but his time at Selhurst Park hasn’t gone to plan, with the attacker struggling for game time under Oliver Glasner.

With Brennan Johnson joining the Eagles, opportunities are going to be even harder to come by, so the chance to join Coventry could be a deal that suits all parties.

Given Esse has already shown his quality in the Championship, there will be an expectation that he can hit the ground running, and when asked by FLW about his arrival, Coventry fan pundit Chris Deez revealed how pleased he was to see this deal happen.

I’m absolutely over the moon with this signing. All I’ve seen on social media is widespread happiness and positivity from the fans. I think it’s a fantastic deal for us.

It seems to be a six-month loan, but I’m hoping there’s an option to buy if we do get promoted, because I think he’d be a cracking player to go into the Premier League with.

I love that he can fit into a number of roles, he suits playing a number ten, but he can also play right-wing, which means Tatsuhiro Sakamoto can finally have a rest.

It’s a shame for Esse that he didn’t get a look-in at Palace, he’s had a few minutes here and there, but he obviously doesn’t fit into their plans now they’ve signed Brennan Johnson.

I’ve always been impressed with Esse when I saw him at Millwall, and he looked really good against us too. So, it’s an incredibly positive signing, especially as we’re not even a week into the window. Hopefully there’s more to come, as we still need a few more in key areas, but this is fantastic news.”

Romain Esse will have a point to prove at Coventry City

As outlined above, Coventry are lacking depth, and Esse’s ability to play in different attacking roles could be vital over the final few months of the season.

For whatever reason, his time at Palace hasn’t worked out, but the Londoners will still feel that he can prove to be a good signing, as it’s worth remembering just how young he is.

Nevertheless, it’s clear he needs to be playing football regularly right now, and you would expect him to be involved every week with the Sky Blues, even if he faces a battle to get into the XI.

After a frustrating 12 months, Esse will be determined to show what he’s all about, and playing in this stylish, attacking Coventry side could be just what he needs to get back on track.
