Konrad Laimer could have ended up in the Premier League as well. Jürgen Klopp revealed that he once wanted to bring the Austrian to Liverpool FC—but in the end, the decision went in favor of Bayern Munich.
The revelation came during the World Cup match between Argentina and Austria (0–2). Klopp used his platform as an analyst on MagentaTV to share a little-known story from his time at Anfield Road. The 59-year-old, who managed the Reds from 2015 to 2024, spoke openly about his interest at the time in the player who is now a Bayern pro.
Even before kickoff, Klopp made it clear what role he had envisioned for Laimer: “As for Laimer, I can say this: Under me, he’d play as a defensive midfielder.” He then revealed: “I wanted to bring him to Liverpool as a defensive midfielder. But then he went to Bayern.”
This statement aligns with reports from 2022. At that time, it was reported that the Premier League club had entered the race to sign Laimer. The Austrian was still under contract with RB Leipzig at the time and was considered one of the most sought-after midfielders on the market.
In the summer of 2023, he ultimately chose the German record champions. The now 29-year-old moved to Säbener Straße on a free transfer, thereby turning down Klopp and Liverpool. At FC Bayern, Laimer has since developed into a versatile key player.
The Austrian’s versatility is also on full display at the World Cup. Against Argentina, he started at left back, whereas in the opening match he had played in the number 10 position. However, he was unable to prevent the loss: Lionel Messi decided the match with a brace in favor of the South Americans.

Nevertheless, Austria’s position remains solid; after all, the ÖFB squad won its opener 3–1 against Jordan.
