Exclusive: Former Liverpool Forward Backs Arne Slot to Remain at the Club

After winning the Premier League title in his debut season, Arne Slot has had a nightmare second season in charge.

Despite a record-breaking spending spree last summer, the Reds’ title defence has been a complete disaster.

The reigning champions currently sit 5th in the Premier League table and were knocked out of the Carabao Cup in an embarrasing third round defeat to Crystal Palace at Anfield.

However, there is still hope. Next week, Liverpool face Manchester City in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

Despite the club’s relative success in Europe so far this season, Arne Slot finds himself under immense pressure.

Speaking exclusively to Anfield Index, Michael Owen believes that the Dutchman’s job is safe for now…

Owen Backs Arne Slot

When asked whether he believes Arne Slot will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, Owen wasn’t convinced.

“I don’t think so,” said Owen, “To achieve what Arne Slot achieved in his first season is a great achievement. Not many new managers win the Premier League in their first season so full credit to him for achieving this.”

“This year there has been a lot of circumstances which you can argue haven’t gone his way. Some will though blame Slot for the title defence, but you have other issues that have arise during this season,” continued Owen.

“But I believe, should Liverpool secure Champions League status next season then Liverpool will keep Slot and he will be able to have a good pre-season with the squad to push on for next year.”

Owen also pointed out that the absence of record-signing Alexander Isak has played a huge part in Liverpool’s struggles this season. The 26-year-old has massively struggled for form and fitness since his £125m move from Newcastle United.

“Also Isak will hopefully be fully fit,” continued Owen, “This was an issue this season that with him being signed so late it was difficult. Isak is an elite striker, so once on form, he is one of the best. And next season Liverpool can look to have him firing.”

“But on Slot, if Liverpool failed to get Champions League Football, then yes, his role would become difficult to argue that he should stay…”

As it stands, the Reds are sat in a Champions League spot, but with just one point taken from the last nine available, things need to change quickly.

For now, their attention remains on progression in the FA Cup and the Champions League. But with tricky Premier League fixtures remaining against the likes of Manchester United, Everton, Aston Villa and Chelsea – Slot is on thin ice.
