Lee Hendrie believes Carl Rushworth would be a quality addition for Coventry City this summer.
Pundit Lee Hendrie has backed Coventry City to sign goalkeeper Carl Rushworth after his proposed move to Rangers stalled.
As per a tweet from journalist Alex Crook, the Sky Blues are keen to swoop in for the 24-year-old given his proposed move to Ibrox collapsed, with Brighton not willing to sanction a deal with the Scottish giants.
Belgian champions Union Saint Gilloise have reportedly made an offer, while Coventry are following developments and may pounce for his signature later into the window.
Frank Lampard’s outfit have made two additions so far this summer after their play-off heartache to Sunderland, recruiting Miguel Angel Brau from Granada on a free transfer, while Kaine Kesler-Hayden bolsters their backline, arriving from Aston Villa.
Now it appears that Coventry are in the market for a new shot-stopper, with Coventry seemingly eager to make the CBS Arena Rushworth’s new home.
With this news in mind, Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has issued his thoughts over the latest summer speculation.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, former Aston Villa midfielder believes the addition of shot-stopper Carl Rushworth would be a “big coup” for Coventry City, with the ex-Swansea City loanee “Premier League bound”.
Hendrie said: “You look at any player or any goalkeeper really that’s played or been around the top level, then I think it’s a big coup for any football club to bring in someone whose Premier League bound, and particularly being linked with Rangers, which looks like it’s collapsed.
“I think Frank (Lampard) will be looking at that and knowing it’s a really good signing. I think that’s an area they haven’t really struggled with goalkeeper-wise, but having someone of his calibre would be a really good addition to Coventry City.”
Despite making just two league appearances for Hull City last term, Carl Rushworth has shown that he can be a confident and dependable figure between the posts in the second tier, with the 24-year-old playing every game in Swansea City’s 2023-24 second tier campaign.
Coventry City have a healthy set of goalkeeping options at the moment, with Oliver Dovin, Ben Wilson and Bradley Collins battling it out for a starting spot.
However, given Wilson’s lengthy knee ligament injury last season, the club probably feels the need to not have that burden and be fully stocked if something like that arises again.
Rushworth is definitely someone who can push for the number one shirt, possessing vital Championship experience and getting to grips with the demands of the division from his time in South Wales.
When big clubs like Rangers register an interest, then you know Rushworth is on the rise in his career. He certainly has the capability to thrive in a promotion push at the CBS Arena, with his familiarity of the division only a positive if a deal can be struck.
