Derby County are plotting a loan move for talented Manchester City prospect Stephen Mfuni, Football League World understands

Derby County have already commenced their summer transfer business with the permanent addition of Bobby Clark, and the Rams are continuing to plug away behind the scenes in search of further reinforcements to John Eustace's squad - which has led the Championship promotion hopefuls to pursue an eye-catching loan deal from Manchester City, Football League World can exclusively reveal.

Derby will be striving to undertake a successful summer window in order to succeed the previous campaign's final-day failure to clinch a play-off berth though they will be helped by the Championship's expansion to create a newly-formed top-eight for the 2026/27 season.

The expectations at Pride Park have elevated following a progressive first full term under Eustace, which saw the Rams shift from relegation-battlers to play-off contenders before only narrowly missing out on a first position inside the top-six since 2019.

The Rams made a host of eye-catching acquisitions in last summer's window, including the initial loan arrival of Clark, with the talented midfielder recently heading to Derbyshire permanently in a reported £6 million deal from RB Salzburg after winning the club's Young Player of the Year award while on loan - and they will only hope for further incomings to follow in the coming weeks.

As Derby's hotly-anticipated transfer business begins to take shape, Football League World can disclose a new target on the books at Man City who has emerged on the club's radar this summer.

Derby County plotting Stephen Mfuni, Manchester City loan transfer raid

The player in question is Man City academy product Stephen Mfuni, who spent the second-half of the previous term on loan at this level with Watford after debuting under Pep Guardiola in his side's stunning 10-1 FA Cup rout of Exeter City and has now placed himself on additional Championship transfer shortlists.

As such, sources have informed FLW that his performances at Vicarage Road last time out have put Derby on red alert. FLW can reveal that the Rams are now lining up a loan swoop for the highly-rated 18-year-old's services, which are likely to have no shortage of interest throughout the division ahead of a likely second exit from the Etihad Stadium.

Mfuni, who also represents England at under-19 level, was of serious loan interest to Sheffield Wednesday in January before heading to the Hornets instead.

Capable of operating in the centre of defence and at left-back, the teenage prospect made a significant impression during his eight appearances for Watford but would see his season cut short after suffering an ankle injury in March.

The versatile defender was particularly impressive when featuring on the left side of Watford's backline when Derby lost 2-0 at Vicarage Road in February, in a performance which will have no doubt left a mark on Derby's key recruitment figureheads.

Widely-regarded among Man City's leading young talents, Mfuni will be looking to gain further senior experience away from the Premier League giants next season - though there's every chance he could have a long-term future with them.

For now, at least, another temporary switch to the Championship awaits and Derby will be bidding to fend off any potential forthcoming competition for the teenager's signature as Eustace looks to bolster his defensive options.

A central defensive pairing of Matt Clarke and Sondre Langas is right up there with the division's strongest partnerships, although limited options behind the duo - and much of the same for Derry Murkin at left-back - means a move for Mfuni would make a great deal of sense, with the City prodigy capable of offering serious strength in depth and even forcing his way into Eustace's strongest side if an agreement can be sealed.
