Danny Rohl's managerial credentials have been called into question by Don Goodman

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is growing increasingly eager to depart Hillsborough this summer.

The 36-year-old had been linked with a move to Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, but former Go Ahead Eagles' manager Paul Simonis was given the job instead.

Middlesborough are believed to have Rohl on their list of Michael Carrick replacements but the German’s compensation fee is proving an issue, the same drawback that saw Southampton look elsewhere.

His release clause is set at £4 million for Premier League clubs, and a bit lower for second-tier teams, as per the Sun.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and ex-EFL striker, Don Goodman, believes Middlesborough should think twice over rushing into appointing Rohl this summer.

“As a manager, I find it really hard to analyse Danny Rohl,” explained Goodman.

“Because what he did when he first came in at Sheffield Wednesday was incredibly impressive, dragging them away from what looked like a lost cause, a relegation situation.

“But last season, a 12th place finish looks good on paper, but it was actually well below par for teams that would normally finish 12th.

“I think that's synonymous with the fact that apart from the top three, points tallies last season were lower than they normally would be. So it’s really, really hard to judge.

“Clearly at 36 years old, he has got a bright future, is a talented young man, and has also had to work with very, very difficult circumstances going on behind the scenes.

“So all in all, he's had a good start to his managerial career, but the jury is still out a little bit on Rohl.”

Rohl should push for Middlesborough move

As the summer draws closer and closer, time is running out for Rohl to make a move and give himself ample preparation at a new club.

Switches to Southampton and Wolfsburg haven’t come off, partly due to his high compensation package, and the German manager can’t afford too many more opportunities to pass him by.

The Boro job would allow the 36-year-old to continue in a division he is now comfortable coaching in and give him the opportunity to excel in charge of a much more competitive outfit.

The North East side have Premier League ambitions and will back their manager to achieve that status, something Rohl will appreciate tenfold following his tumultuous time at Hillsborough.

Rohl should be doing everything he can to try and get himself the vacant position at the Riverside Stadium, and not see another club turn their nose up at his release clause.

If so, there is a real danger of an extremely awkward situation developing at Sheffield Wednesday as the new season draws closer.
