Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that Barry Bannan would fit the bill for Wrexham if he did leave Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

It was reported by The Sun last weekend that the 35-year-old could depart Hillsborough amid the turmoil behind the scenes involving the late payment of player wages.

And it us understood that the Red Dragons are waiting to pounce with a lucrative offer to tempt him to the Racecourse Ground, should he leave the South Yorkshire outfit.

Wrexham are planning for life in the Championship after Phil Parkinson’s side earned automatic promotion from League One at the first attempt last season.

Goodman believes that Bannan’s ideal outcome would be to remain at Sheffield Wednesday for next season despite the issues behind the scenes.

However, he feels that a move to Wrexham would fit the bill for the kind of player that Parkinson likes to have in his squad.

“I can totally understand why Wrexham like the idea of signing Barry Bannan,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.

“He’s in the twilight of his career, but still seems to play a lot of football and is a quality operator.

“Phil Parkinson, we know, likes experienced lads and certainly Barry Bannan falls into that category.

“I think he’s publicly said he wants to stay at Sheffield Wednesday, the problem for him is the turmoil at the club, the wages not being paid, transfer embargoes, etc. and the ownership and whether the manager is still going to be at the football club.

“So, in an ideal world I think Barry Bannan would like to stay, but it’s not an ideal world and it would be strange to see him plying his trade elsewhere.”

Sheffield Wednesday finished 12th in the Championship last season under Danny Rohl, but the German’s future remains uncertain amid the financial issues brought on by owner Dejphon Chansiri, with the Owls now set for a three-transfer window ban on paying transfer fees for new players.

Bannan has spent so much of his career with Sheffield Wednesday, and has seen a lot of ups and downs in that time, that the best case scenario involves him staying.

The ownership situation forcing him out of the club would be a terrible outcome for supporters, as well as the player himself.

He was excellent last season, and showed he’s still very capable of competing at a Championship level at 35.
