Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has insisted that one name within Pep Guardiola’s squad should be playing “as much as possible” despite recent struggles.
As City continue to juggle domestic and European ambitions in a fiercely competitive campaign, the former club icon has offered his perspective on key figures within the current squad.
The Argentine legend, who remains one of the most influential faces and voices associated with the club, has kept a close eye on developments under the continued stewardship of Pep Guardiola since his own departure.
Much of the attention this season has centred on Erling Haaland, whose extraordinary scoring exploits have once again placed him at the forefront of European football. Even during a rare mid-season dry spell, Guardiola publicly backed his striker, maintaining confidence in both Haaland’s mentality and long-term output.
Now speaking exclusively to City Xtra on behalf of Stake, Sergio Aguero was quizzed on whether – as Manchester City’s all-time leading goalscorer – he had any tips for the club’s current star striker Haaland to further improve his game.
“Erling has always had a unique ability to score goals. He has shown that at every club and with his national team. He has been very consistent, which is not easy to maintain,” said Aguero.
“That instinct for goal is something only a few players have. At City, he has improved his understanding of the game a lot,” he continued. “I see him better in that aspect compared to when he first arrived. He is only 25, so he still has a lot of room to grow.
“I also know he takes great care of his body. Erling doesn’t need too much advice. He is very professional. Taking care of his body is key. If he keeps doing that, we will see an even more consistent Haaland in the future.”
One name that Sergio Aguero knows very well and has previously spoken very highly of is Phil Foden, who finds himself as a regular feature on the bench at present amid the staggeringly impressive form of Nico O’Reilly in the side.
“Phil deserves to play as much as possible,” insisted Aguero. “He is getting back to his best level and he is one of those players you always want in your team. The ball sticks to his feet. He has vision, a great shot and he scores goals.
“He is very complete and needs to be close to the ball. That helps the team a lot. The more minutes he plays, the better he will perform. He is a club guy, loved by everyone, and I have a lot of affection for him.”
Sergio Aguero’s praise arrives at a pivotal stage of the season for Erling Haaland, who has responded emphatically since the turn of the year. After ending his open-play drought, the striker has reasserted his importance in the Premier League title race.
Attention has also turned toward Phil Foden, whose season has been shaped by tactical rotation and fierce competition. Despite featuring in high-profile fixtures from the bench, the midfielder has continued to make decisive contributions albeit more sporadically.
With the club still chasing major honours across competitions, Sergio Aguero’s comments are likely to resonate strongly among supporters, with his endorsement of Foden in particular adding further intrigue to Guardiola’s selection decisions as City aim to maintain momentum.
