Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about Torbjorn Heggem’s exit from West Brom to Bologna.
Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has admitted that he doesn’t think West Brom have made the right move by selling Torbjorn Heggem this summer.
The Baggies confirmed that the towering Norwegian has moved to Italy with Serie A outfit Bologna, signing a deal until 2029.
Albion have reportedly pocketed a £9m fee as well as adding in a sell-on clause, which will be crucial towards attacking the remainder of the summer transfer window.
The Black Country outfit have also acted swiftly to bring in his replacement, with Krystian Bielik arriving on a permanent deal from Birmingham City and signing a three-year contract at The Hawthorns.
Meanwhile, Albion are ramping up transfer efforts in other areas of the squad, with Manchester United’s Toby Collyer expected to complete a loan move and don the blue and white stripes.
With this news in mind, Lee Hendrie has spoken to FLW about Heggem’s exit from West Brom, assessing whether the club has made the right decision.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, ex-Aston Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie has slammed West Brom’s decision to part ways with Torbjorn Heggem, believing the 26-year-old was a vital player to their backline.
Hendrie said: “Heggem has now made his move to Bologna. I do think that West Brom have something else planned now they’ve allowed this to happen because he was key last season, played a large portion of their games and was a very solid centre-back.
“You do think that selling him on, they’re going to be using the money to bring more players into the football club, but I’m not sure it was the right deal for the club to get rid of him.
“It’s obviously attracted the players’ decision to leave the football club, but you do feel that West Brom, with a new manager, trying to build and move foundations to take them forward, I’m not sure this was the right move.
"I think West Brom should have done all they could to keep hold of him as he is at a fine age of 26 and was a big player for the club.”
It was widely documented that West Brom had to part ways with one of their top assets in order to be competitive in the summer transfer window, and with Torbjorn Heggem’s exit, they’ve got a great opportunity to improve multiple areas of the squad that need desperate attention.
Albion had done well during the opening stages of the window to recruit the likes of Nat Phillips, Aune Heggebo and Nat Phillips while on a shoestring budget, but they needed an influx of cash to pursue other targets, and now it looks like that will be possible.
The Baggies will now have to address positions such as full-back, attacking midfield and out wide if they are to sustain themselves towards the top end of the table.
The Bilkul ownership have already been successful in their approach to recruiting players since they took over the club, with Heggem a classic example of making a superb profit for just 12 months of work.
There is trust that Albion can find the right players to give Ryan Mason the tools to be successful, and it will be interesting to see what other figures walk into the building between now and the 1st September deadline, now they have precious funds.
