Lee Hendrie has told FLW his verdict on Sheffield Wednesday's £4m asking price for Pierce Charles
Lee Hendrie has claimed that Pierce Charles has enough potential to warrant a £4 million asking price from Sheffield Wednesday.
It has been reported by Alan Nixon that the Owls have set a new seven-figure asking price for the goalkeeper amid summer interest in a move.
The Yorkshire outfit have become vulnerable to low-ball offers from their rivals due to their perilous financial position, which saw Djeidi Gassama depart last summer to Rangers for a reported £2.5 million fee.
It was claimed last summer that West Ham and Strasbourg were interested in a move for the shot-stopper, who is currently out of action due to injury.
The 20-year-old is likely to go into Henrik Pedersen’s starting lineup upon his return to fitness, having featured in the last 10 league games for Sheffield Wednesday prior to his fitness issue.
Hendrie believes that Charles possesses a lot of potential, despite not having played very many games for Sheffield Wednesday yet in his career.
He has claimed the goalkeeper is good enough, and that if someone wants to pay that kind of money to sign him in January then they will, making it a worthwhile stance for the club to take.
“He’s a young man, he’s 20-years-of-age, he’s obviously been in and around the football club for a good few seasons, obviously not stacking up loads of appearances and he’s injured at the moment,” Hendrie exclusively told Football League World.
“But, when you look at his age, you do think that there’s potential there and I think, listen, if someone wants to pay that sort of money I’m sure they will do, if they think he’s good enough.
“Which I do think he is good enough, there’s no doubt of that.
“On the flip side of that, if they take that stance, they’re going to be getting to keep that goalkeeper if no one wants to pay that sort of fee.
“I know he’s injured, but I think he could certainly go and kick on and play a number of games when he’s back and available in October time.
“So, I think keeping a stance on that, yes for a young player, I definitely think that it’s worth it.”
Sheffield Wednesday has had a tough start to the new Championship campaign due to their turbulent summer.
But the Owls did get their first win of the season away at Fratton Park last weekend, earning a valuable three points to move up to four points from their first six fixtures.
The Yorkshire outfit are still 23rd in the table, but they are now only a point from safety, and they are four points clear of bitter rivals Sheffield United.
Next up for Pedersen’s side is a home clash against QPR on 27 September in a 3pm kick-off.
If a club comes in with a £4 million bid for Charles in January and Sheffield Wednesday accept then he will be worth that amount of money.
However, the Owls’ financial position could be quite different by then depending on the ownership status, so it’s too soon to say just yet how viable that is.
There is no doubt that he is someone with a lot of potential, and hopefully he will show some of that potential when he is back to full fitness next month.
For a goalkeeper to be playing regularly at just 20 is a very good sign for their development, and he could become a key player for Sheffield Wednesday this season.
