Chelsea look set for another season with Robert Sanchez in goal as tight budgets and needs in other areas take priority.

Our writer Simon Phillips has been speaking to his sources about Chelsea’s summer plans, and he’s come up with some interesting results.

The Blues are set for a “very busy” summer, and they want to target “a number of areas on the pitch.”

Chelsea still “undecided” on key position

In terms of a goalkeeper, most fans think that should be a priority. But Robert Sanchez’s good form to end the season and the relative disasters in defence and attack have lowered the priority of a new keeper. The source says it’s “undecided” whether the Blues aim to sign a new first choice.

A lot will depend on who they can secure in other positions, and how sales go. But right now it feels to us like Sanchez will be first choice once again, with perhaps a new backup or Mike Penders back from loan to compete with him.

If a cheaper veteran option becomes available, like Mike Maignan last summer, it’s still feasible we could pursue that. But right now, the sporting directors clearly feel they have bigger fish to fry.

Phillips also reported on the attributes of the players the Blues are going to look at, both physically and mentally.

With no European football to play, there are going to be a hell of a lot of players not getting the minutes they want next season.
