Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie weighs up whether Sean Dyche would be the right fit for Carrick's replacement

Middlesbrough's decision to part ways with Michael Carrick came after the Teeside club failed to secure a Championship play-off place this past season, and they are now searching for his successor.

As per SportsBoom, Sean Dyche is now a somewhat surprising candidate for the Boro manager job.

With this in mind, FLW asked Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie to weigh up whether Sean Dyche would be the right fit for Carrick's replacement.

Lee Hendrie dismisses Dyche as wrong fit for Middlesbrough

Speaking exclusively to FLW, Hendrie is concerned about Dyche's suitability for the Championship club - arguing that his style would represent too much of a departure from the base that was built by the outgoing Carrick.

"I think he’s completely different to the way and the style that they’re trying to adapt to," Hendrie told FLW.

"I think what Michael Carrick’s done is give them a real platform now to really go on, they’ve got close over seasons playing the way that they have done - so that’s why bringing in maybe a Robbie Keane, a Rob Edwards to that extent - I think that would be a better fit.

The former England international was somewhat critical of how Dyche's approach might clash with Boro's idea of how they want to play.

"Sean Dyche will always be one of them managers that people sort of look at his style of play and sometimes think that it’s not the right thing and it’s not the right fit - I don’t think it is for Boro at this moment in time," Hendrie continued.

Sean Dyche believed to be holding out for Premier League job

Rather than seeing the Middlesbrough vacancy as an immediate opportunity, Hendrie thinks Dyche is likely to hold out for a Premier League return - following his dismissal from Everton in January.

He added, "I think Sean will be waiting for something that maybe might come around, you know one of the first managers that’ll be sacked probably at the lower end of the Premier League, maybe where he can step in and do a great job like he did at Everton."

Despite Dyche achieving two promotions with Burnley, Hendrie's words reflect concerns about the tactics he uses - rather than his overall ability to manage.

There's no denying his direct and physical style is the opposite to the possession-based approach that was preferred by Carrick. Under the latter, Boro's average possession over the season was 56%.

The appointment will undoubtedly be very important for Boro if they want to be back in contention for promotion to the top-flight - after falling short of the play-offs in consecutive seasons.
