As per Voetbal Primeur, Ajax may part ways with Gaston Ávila. The Sven Mislintat purchase ultimately struggled in Amsterdam and is desired by his old club, Boca Juniors. This news is also reported by Argentinian media.
Ajax paid 12.5 million euros for Ávila, who came over from Royal Antwerp in the summer of 2023. Unfortunately, the Argentinian defender never lived up to that price tag. Ávila only played a handful of games, suffered a very serious injury in January 2024, and was sent on loan to Brazilian club Fortaleza at the beginning of this calendar year.
Reports now suggest that he may not return to Ajax. Boca, the club where Ávila was already under contract between 2020 and 2022, are considering bringing him back.
The Argentine giants appointed Miguel Ángel Russo as their new head coach on Monday. He was also the coach when Ávila played for Boca, and is said to be open to a reunion.
The 23-year-old Ávila, who can play both centrally and at left-back, is under contract with Fortaleza until December 31, 2025. Yet, while the Brazilians have included an option to buy, Boca can in principle pick him up this summer.
Ávila is not a regular at Fortaleza. He has only played nine games for the club. Should he move to Boca soon, he could be seen at the Club World Cup.
