Expert opinion: Is DR Congo favored over Nigeria in the African World Cup 2026 playoffs?

The final of the African playoffs for the 2026 World Cup will see DR Congo face off against Nigeria this Sunday.

The winner of this clash will secure a ticket to the intercontinental playoffs, with a chance to qualify for the final stage of the 2026 World Cup.

To break down this high-stakes African football fixture, Foot Africa sought the insight of Congolese journalist Juscar Mukazo, who answered the burning question: Can DR Congo really be considered favorites over Nigeria?

DRC–Nigeria is a blockbuster match. Nobody wants to miss out on the World Cup. This is going to be a very tough encounter, a real battle, because it’s in these moments that you prove you deserve your place on the world stage.Nigeria is no longer the dominant force it once was. They’re struggling to find their rhythm. Against Gabon, they were under pressure throughout. If the Nigerians pulled through, it was mainly because Bouanga and Aubameyang weren’t at their best that day.”When up against a precise and efficient attack, Nigeria really suffers. DR Congo isn’t just about individual talent—they have a real collective unit, stable and disciplined, thanks in large part to Sébastien Desabre’s work. Even against Cameroon, despite being surprised by their opponent’s tactics, the team stayed solid and focused.”“With Mbemba, Wan-Bissaka, and the young defenders, the backline inspires real confidence... When you compare their journeys, DR Congo is much more consistent and improves with every match. Nigeria, on the other hand, moves forward in fits and starts. On paper, yes, DR Congo seems to have a slight edge.”But finals aren’t won on paper. Both teams have their weapons, and no one’s showing up as an underdog. The pitch will decide.DR Congo does seem more solid than Nigeria right now. But only the truth on the field will decide.
