Rob Edwards’ dismissal at Wolves took shape while he was abroad on holiday, as chairman Nathan Shi tasked Jorge Mendes and Valdir Cardoso with talks for Cesar Peixoto.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, by late Wednesday the decision had been made, yet Edwards, mapping out pre-season after landing Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez, was unaware.
He built a strong relationship with Andre and influenced the midfielder’s new deal. He was also key to signing Trippier, who praised him in club media this week.
Edwards first learned of the Peixoto move via social media reports. On Thursday morning he received a call from club chiefs informing him of his sacking.
The change caught senior staff off guard, with some only realising after it became public. His club media appearances around the deals, plus his cameo in Tuesday’s Jimenez video, show how unexpected it was.
The timing is bizarre and the execution more baffling. Wolves had started the window strongly and, with sporting director Matt Jackson, appeared to have a plan.
Internally, many are bemused and some angry at how the decision was handled and the lack of transparency. In short, few at the very top saw it coming.
Mendes had tried to push other coaches earlier in the season and Shi had assessed options, but there was still an expectation Edwards would continue. He had been given private reassurances and indications of backing.
That is why the outcome has stunned staff, with Wolves now set to back a completely unproven Mendes client instead.
