Former Juventus sporting director Fabio Paratici said: "The problem was that by scoring a goal per game, Cristiano made life too easy for his team-mates, who had already won so much. That’s why we changed coaches, to try a shake-up." He was speaking to Corriere della Sera.

Juventus signed Ronaldo from Real Madrid in 2018 for a fee exceeding €100 million, aiming to end their wait for the Champions League. The move followed years of Serie A dominance and two finals in five years, yet it coincided with growing off-field instability.

"Precious for Juve, important for everyone, just like [Jose] Mourinho was at Roma. A championship needs great players. We all wanted the Champions League, and we could have won it in our first year. The elimination by Ajax still sticks in my mind."

Ronaldo scored 101 goals in 134 games during his three seasons, but Juventus did not advance beyond the quarter-finals.

"No, Allegri is the most intelligent of all; his ability to connect with the players makes the difference. Sarri had some difficulties at the beginning, being more tactically fundamentalist, but then he adapted. And he won the Scudetto too; many have forgotten that."

Paratici said the deal was not solely to blame for later legal and financial trouble, though the size of Ronaldo’s contract became hard to sustain. The pandemic made matters worse, leaving a heavy wage bill and limiting squad renewal. Ronaldo left in summer 2021 for Manchester United and now plays for Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League.
