Real Madrid have swooped in to grab a Liverpool transfer target. The Reds may need a new plan.

Real Madrid aren't wasting much time with their transfer business, it seems. Though, that all relies on the outcome of their presidential election.

Florentino Perez is busy getting verbal agreements, though. He's got one with Ibrahima Konate for starters and the Frenchman is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer when his Liverpool contract expires.

They haven't stopped there, either. Fabrizio Romano confirms that Denzel Dumfries now has an agreement with Real Madrid after they agreed to trigger his €20m release clause at Inter.

He'll replace Dani Carvajal for next season and compete with Trent Alexander-Arnold for a spot. But it's also a blow for Liverpool.

The Reds have consistently been linked with Dumfries since January. They looked into a deal for him post-Conor Bradley getting injured and reports have stuck around since.

Bradley is expected to be out for a long time and Liverpool are back in the market for a right-back just one year after signing Jeremie Frimpong. Dumfries looked like one of the more sensible targets, particularly before Arne Slot was let go.

But that now won't be happening. Liverpool will need to find other options if they want a new right-back - but perhaps they were happy to do so anyway after the head coach change.

Denzel Dumfries: Situation Summary

Inter Milan Campaign and Stats

As of 3 June 2026, Denzel Dumfries has concluded a highly successful domestic campaign with Inter Milan under Simone Inzaghi. The 30-year-old Dutch right-back enjoyed a productive season, making 34 Serie A appearances as the Nerazzurri successfully defended their league title. Dumfries contributed four goals and six assists, providing immense tactical width and athleticism along the right flank. He wrapped up his stellar club campaign in a 2–1 victory against Verona on 24 May before shifting his focus to international duty.

Contract Standoff and Premier League Interest

With his contract at the San Siro rapidly ticking down toward its final year, a fierce summer transfer battle is brewing for the dynamic wing-back. Negotiations over a contract extension have hit a complete standstill due to wage disagreements, alerting several elite clubs across Europe. Manchester United and Aston Villa are both monitoring his situation closely, looking to exploit the deadlock. Inter Milan may be forced to cash in for a cut-price fee of £25 million to avoid losing him for free.
