FC Barcelona have placed a lot of emphasis on scouting around the world and signing developmental players who are impressing across Europe and beyond. Deco and head of scouting Joao Amaral have done very well in this regard.

Even in the past summer, the club signed Roony Bardghji from Copenhagen for a bargain fee, which has proven to be an excellent decision. More recently, Barcelona have also secured agreements for Hamza Abdelkarim and Ajay Tavares as part of their long term planning.

Now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona have agreed a deal to sign 19-year-old Uruguayan left back Patricio Pacifico from Defensor Sporting Club.

The agreement is structured as a loan with a €1.8 million buy option plus add-ons, which could become mandatory under certain conditions. Romano has given his trademark “Here we go”, confirming that the operation is complete.

Patricio Pacifico has already made his debut with Defensor SC’s first team and has been called up by Marcelo Bielsa to train with the senior national team. A pacy left-back who loves to get forward, he also has experience playing as a centre-back and even in midfield.

He is regarded as the best U-20 player in Uruguay at the moment, and many European clubs were keen to sign him.

Barcelona already have a couple of talented young left-backs in their ranks. Alejandro Balde is a first-team star, while Jofre Torrents is another La Masia product tipped to make it big.

Now, with Pacifico, Barcelona would have another talented youngster in their ranks. If you cannot buy stars, you have to make them, and that is exactly what the club seems to be doing with these developmental bets.
