UEFA is once again cracking down on FC Bayern and the Munichfans are once again the focus of the disciplinary watchdogs. Three breaches of the rules have now led to severe penalties

FC Bayern is once again the focus of UEFA’s disciplinary bodies. Following the 3-1 defeat in the Champions League away match at Arsenal FC at the Emirates Stadium, UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body has now officially confirmed that three breaches of the rules were committed during the match by Bayern fans travelling with the team. The consequence: fines totalling 70,000 euros

The repercussions of the match thus extend far beyond the sporting events. There had already been heated scenes in the visitors‘ area before kick-off. According to UEFA, there were riots, objects were thrown and messages and banners were displayed that were deemed inappropriate for a sporting event

Specifically, UEFA imposed a fine of €40,000 for rioting and throwing objects. A further €30,000 was due for FC Bayern fans allegedly displaying offensive or unauthorised messages. The incidents mainly occurred before the start of the match in the visitors‘ block, where there were clashes with stewards. As a result, the police even had to intervene to bring the situation under control

This decision is particularly explosive for FC Bayern, as the club is already under particular scrutiny by UEFA. In recent months, there have been several similar incidents at international away matches that have put a strain on Munich’s disciplinary record

Following the massive pyrotechnics incidents in the CL home match against Sporting Lisbon, UEFA imposed sanctions against FCB just a few days ago and banned parts of the south curve for the upcoming CL clash against Union Saint-Gilloise (January 21, 2026). A fine of 30,000 euros was also imposed

FC Bayern had already been punished in February 2024 following an away match at Lazio Roma after fans had set off pyrotechnics and thrown objects. Similar offences had also been committed at the group match in Copenhagen in October 2023. UEFA even issued a suspended away ban at the time, which could have been activated in the event of further incidents

Against this backdrop, the new sanction is likely to cause internal alarm. The club faces the challenge of acknowledging the passionate support of its fans while also preventing further escalation. Any further incidents could result in much harsher consequences in the future – up to and including partial expulsions or matches being held at international competitions.
