FC Köln working on ambitious deal for versatile West Ham midfielder | OneFootball

Sky Germany reports that 1. FC Köln are exploring a move to sign West Ham midfielder Edson Álvarez.

The 28-year-old is said to be open to joining the Billy Goats, with Köln working to make a deal happen despite the transfer being considered difficult.

Álvarez’s reported salary of €5-6 million per season remains the biggest obstacle.

The imminent sale of Jakub Kamiński to Benfica for a reported €20 million is set to strengthen Köln’s position in their efforts to sign the Mexico captain.

Another factor in Köln’s favour could be squad planner Tim Steidten, who was heavily involved in bringing Álvarez to West Ham in 2023 during his time with the London club.

Álvarez spent the 2025/26 season on loan at Fenerbahçe and made four appearances for Mexico at the World Cup before their elimination against England in the round of 16.

The 28-year-old’s natural position is as a No. 6, but he can also operate as a centre-back and on the right side of defence.
