FC Bayern has been conspicuously restrained during the winter transfer period. While numerous top European clubs have made adjustments, things have remained quiet at Säbener Strasse. This restraint is no coincidence, but part of a clear plan, as sporting director Christoph Freund has now confirmed

In sporting terms, there is currently little reason for hectic interventions. This season, Munich have shown that the squad is one of the best in Europe in terms of quality. FC Bayern has an excellent squad at the top, the results are good and the development under Vincent Kompany is stable. Nevertheless, those responsible know that there will be changes in the summer – not out of weakness, but for strategic reasons

Bayern definitely see potential for optimisation, particularly in the squad as a whole. Individual positions are thin on the ground or open in terms of prospects, which makes targeted reinforcement necessary. The restraint in winter should therefore be seen as preparation rather than a standstill. At Säbener Straße, the aim is not to react, but to act – and at the right time

Several construction sites for the new season

The right-back position continues to be the biggest construction site. Despite various solutions, this role has not yet been permanently filled at top international level. It is highly likely that a new signing will be made in the summer

There could also be movement in central midfield, with Leon Goretzka’s departure at the end of the season creating a gap that needs to be filled both in sporting and structural terms. In attack, Bayern are looking for a reliable backup for Luis Díaz on the left wing in order to better cope with the strain of a long season

Another factor of uncertainty remains the center of defence. If the planned contract extension with Dayot Upamecano does not materialize, Munich will have to react here as well. The scenarios that are already being played through internally are correspondingly broad

Reports have recently circulated that FC Bayern could launch a major transfer offensive in the summer of 2026. An investment sum of up to 200 million euros has been put forward. It remains to be seen whether such a major financial feat will actually take place, but it is clear that those responsible are taking the upcoming transfer period very seriously

Christoph Freund made it clear that planning has long been underway. „Of course we have our plans as to what could be good for the squad,“ explained the sporting director. At the same time, he emphasised that they would not be put under pressure. „We still have five months to go and we also have good young players who are on loan or with us. There is still some time to go, but we have our thoughts on this.“

This statement underlines Bayern’s strategic approach. In addition to external transfers, internal solutions also play a role. Loan players and talented youngsters from the club’s own ranks are being closely monitored and could play a bigger role in the planning than it currently appears from the outside

FC Bayern is thus pursuing a clear line: no hectic improvements in the winter, no actionism out of uncertainty, but a calm analysis with a view to the summer. Those responsible are convinced that the current squad can successfully complete the season. At the same time, the basis for the coming season should be laid early on

However, it is also clear that as long as key personnel such as Dayot Upamecano, Manuel Neuer and Serge Gnabry have not been finalized, Bayern cannot fully attack the transfer market at the moment.
