Federico Valverde has denied he fought with Aurélien Tchouaméni, saying his head cut came from accidentally striking a table.

The player said in an Instagram story on Thursday night that a training flashpoint on Wednesday, magnified by fatigue and frustration, was followed by another dispute on Thursday. He said he hit his head on a table by accident, causing a small cut that required a routine hospital visit, and argued such matters should stay in the dressing room while claiming someone had spread the story.

Real Madrid have opened disciplinary proceedings against Tchouaméni and Valverde after a confrontation at training on Thursday morning.

Valverde apologised for the situation and said it had hurt him, stressing how much the club means to him.

The midfielder has been diagnosed with a head injury and must rest for 10 to 14 days, so he will miss Sunday’s Clasico against Barcelona.
