Fenerbahce’s staff were stunned that Manchester United attacker Amad Diallo did not come on sooner in their Europa League clash last night, according to The Athletic.

They feared the worst when the first touch of the Ivory Coast international following a cross-field pass by Noussair Mazraoui took him beyond Mert Muldur.

However, the Fenerbahce left-back scythed Diallo down before he could cause any damage, and the game ended 1-1.

Many people expected the 22-year-old to replace Bruno Fernandes after he was sent off against FC Twente.

Diallo was evidently upset at not starting and being left on the bench as Antony was sent on before him.

Assistant coaching trio Ruud van Nistelrooy, Rene Hake and Andreas Georgson all tried to cajole him into a smile before he went on.

He still appeared forlorn despite being the first to go over to the travelling fans to applaud them after the match.

Diallo has featured in 11 games across all competitions this term, starting seven times, and would have fancied his chances of starting ahead of Antony last night.

He would not have come on had the Brazilian not been stretchered off after replacing Marcus Rashford.

Diallo could have influenced proceedings last night had he come on earlier, and it is unsurprising that Fenerbahce chiefs were shocked at the decision to leave him on the bench for that long.

Man United return to action on Sunday with a visit to West Ham United, and the Ivorian will hope to get more minutes and prove himself on the pitch.
