Fernando Diniz welcomed the debut of semi-automatic offside in the Brasileiro after Corinthians’ 1-1 draw at Bahia in Salvador, but said he opposes the proposed Lei Vini Jr. among incoming IFAB-backed changes.

Bahia had the ball in the net three more times, one strike chalked off for a high boot and two for offside, with one detected by the new system.

Diniz said the tool reduces pressure on referees and speeds up decisions. He felt the previous process in Brazil took too long and left room for interpretation, adding this version removes that scope and improves accuracy.

For the rollout, every Série A ground received between 28 and 32 dedicated cameras and five local servers to process images, sending data in real time to the CBF VAR Operations Centre in Rio de Janeiro, which has 10 integrated control rooms.

The system is run with Genius Sports and is already used at the World Cup, Premier League, Belgian league and Liga MX. The CBF invested about R$ 25 million to implement it.

Among other IFAB changes under consideration is the Lei Vini Jr., which would see players, substitutes or substituted players sent off if they cover their mouth while delivering provocative, demeaning or inflammatory remarks. Diniz called that excessive and said he would not like it adopted, while supporting most other tweaks trialled at the World Cup.

The CBF will meet the 40 clubs from Série A and B in August to present impact studies, share World Cup lessons and finalise an adoption schedule. Opta has been hired to support discussions and referees are in training. Other proposals include five-second counts for time-wasting on goal kicks and throw-ins, stricter substitution and medical-return timings, and broader VAR assistance.

Conmebol will introduce the new measures in the Sudamericana and Libertadores knockouts, excluding the Lei Vini Jr. Corinthians play Rosario Central on 13 and 20 August in the Libertadores last 16.
