Fernando Diniz makes his Corinthians debut against Argentina's Platense at Estádio Vicente López on Thursday at 21:00, the Group E opener of the Copa Libertadores. The 52-year-old has a chance to improve his record in first matches.
Since 2009 he has taken charge in 20 debuts across spells with Votoraty, Paulista, Audax, Guaratinguetá, Paraná, Oeste, Athletico-PR, Fluminense, São Paulo, Vasco, Cruzeiro and Brazil. According to Ogol, those games delivered eight wins, seven draws and five defeats, a 51.7% return, with 29 scored and 23 conceded, averaging 1.45 and 1.15 per game.
His standout start came with Brazil on 8 September 2023, a 5-1 win over Bolivia at the Mangueirão in Belém in the opening round of 2026 World Cup qualifying. Neymar and Rodrygo each scored twice, and Raphinha added the other.
Another notable bow was in 2017, his fourth stint at Audax, when the Osasco club beat São Paulo 4-2 at Arena Barueri in the Paulista. His heaviest opening defeat was in 2012 as Atlético Sorocaba lost 4-2 to Palmeiras B in the Paulista A2.
His most recent debut, with Vasco da Gama, ended in a 1-0 loss to Lanús in the Copa Sudamericana on 15 May 2025.
Diniz must also halt Corinthians' nine-match winless run. They have not won since 19 February, a 1-0 victory over Athletico-PR in the Brasileirão at Arena da Baixada, followed by five draws and four defeats.
