Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was withdrawn at half-time by Marcelo Bielsa after another mistake against Spain on the third matchday of the World Cup.
L'Équipe reports that the 40-year-old’s fifth World Cup has turned sour. He had already made a costly error in the 2-2 draw with Cape Verde a few days earlier.
Against Spain, he failed to deal with Alex Baena’s 42nd-minute strike, which opened the scoring. The Estudiantes goalkeeper has 137 caps for Uruguay.
Bielsa then made a decisive call at the interval, replacing Muslera with Sergio Rochet. Winless in Group H, Uruguay needed to respond to keep alive hopes of reaching the round of 32.
It was the first time a Uruguay goalkeeper had been substituted at half-time of a World Cup match, across 15 participations. Uruguay are two-time world champions, in 1930 and 1950.
