Ferran Torres, 26, has yet to catch fire for Spain at this World Cup, though recent cameos offered hope and produced an assist. According to L'Équipe, the Barcelona forward is a potential PSG target and has struggled for rhythm across the tournament.
He started the opener against Cape Verde, a 0-0 draw, on the right while Lamine Yamal recovered. From six yards he struck the bar with a clear chance, prompting online mockery that has often followed him.
Against Saudi Arabia, a finish was ruled out for offside after a VAR check, the forward left muttering a plea for it to stand. He later came on centrally against Uruguay in the final quarter-hour and missed again.
In the last two matches he has been used from the left, adding energy, options and depth to Spain’s play. Execution still faltered at times, yet he helped secure a quarter-final place, threading a fine pass for Mikel Merino in the 1-0 win over Portugal.
That has not shifted perceptions, and he appears to feel his margin for error is slimmer than others, despite 21 club goals this season. His Barcelona future is uncertain, with a year left on his deal and no renewal offered, partly because an extension would trigger a payment of €8m to Manchester City. A move cannot be ruled out, unless he chooses to see out his contract and depart on a free next summer.
