FIFA opens disciplinary case over Malvinas flag and final incidents | OneFootball

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and several Argentina players, examining the display of a Malvinas flag after the 2026 World Cup semi-final win over England and incidents in the final.

FIFA said the episode could fall under its ban on political manifestations, which prohibits using official competitions to convey messages outside sport.

The flag, bearing the legend “Las Malvinas son argentinas”, was shown by Argentina players during celebrations in Atlanta and became one of the most widely circulated images of the tournament.

The case also draws on a report from the ethics instructor appointed to the matter and names Nahuel Molina, Leandro Paredes, Thiago Almada and coaching staff member Roberto Ayala. Spain’s Gavi is also included.

The AFA is being investigated for potential breaches of the Disciplinary Code related to non-sporting expressions, improper conduct, discrimination and racist aggression. It also covers security failings, match delays, protocol breaches, inappropriate messages and objects thrown by fans during various games.

In addition, Molina and Paredes face charges of aggression, while Almada and Gavi are under investigation for unsporting conduct.
