Filipe Luis was appointed AS Monaco head coach on Monday 6 July, the club said in a statement, as training resumed today. The 40-year-old Brazilian has signed a two-year contract to June 2028.
He replaces Sébastien Pocognoli, dismissed in May after a season that ended in seventh place in Ligue 1. Players are undergoing physical and medical tests today and tomorrow, and Luis will lead his first on-pitch session on Wednesday 8 July.
Luis arrives with assistant Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares. Antony Santiago, formerly Monaco’s head of tactical analysis, becomes an assistant. Goalkeeper coach Jyri Nieminem has also joined, and he already knows Lukas Hradecky after coaching Finland’s goalkeepers.
Flamengo dismissed him in March. The former Atlético Madrid left-back, capped 44 times for Brazil with two goals, posted 63 wins, 23 draws and 15 defeats, and lifted the 2024 Copa do Brasil, 2025 Supercopa do Brasil, 2025 Campeonato Carioca, 2025 Brazilian title and 2025 Copa Libertadores.
Monaco have chosen him for a possession-based attacking style and his work with young players. He is viewed by some European observers as a coach on the rise. He has yet to work on the continent, and Monaco are said to have beaten strong competition to secure him.
Official business has been brisk at La Turbie, with Krépin Diatta’s stint ending, Ansu Fati and Nazinho signed, Mathys Detourbet loaned out, Wout Faes and Simon Adingra departing at the end of their loans, and Caio Henrique transferred to Ajax.
