First time since Walter – Danny Rohl achieves incredible Rangers feat

August 2021 may not stand out for most Rangers fans, but it was, astonishingly, the last time Rangers beat Celtic in a meaningful league match. Danny Rohl, by hook or by crook, has achieved something no Rangers manager has since then: won when it mattered. It was a big Danny Rohl achievement.

That last win was Steven Gerrard just before he left Rangers, since then, no Rangers boss has registered a meaningful win over Celtic in the league.

Meaning

Now what do we mean by this? Simple: when something was riding on the result aside pride.

Rangers have certainly beaten Celtic since then, but only when the league was already long gone. Beale and Clement got wins, even Barry did – but in all cases the league was long lost.

Danny Rohl becomes the first Rangers manager in half a decade to beat Celtic when there was everything very much still to play for.

Walter

Not only that, but it’s Rangers first meaningful win at Parkhead, aside the Gerrard era, since Walter Smith in 2010.

This is, therefore, Rangers’ first win in a meaningful league fixture at Parkhead in front of a home crowd in 16 years.

That is an absolutely staggering and barely comprehensible stat. That Rangers hadn’t won at a packed Parkhead in the league for almost two decades.

And somehow Danny Rohl with his ramshackle squad did it to the tune of 1-3, the very same margin Walter managed way back when in 2010.

Domination

Celtic have dominated the Old Firm league fixtures for 16 years. And this was the first time someone properly ‘did a Walter’ on them in all that time. When it mattered.

This win was up there with Walter’s colossal return in 2007 when he took his team to Parkhead and one stellar Ugo scissor kick later and the 3 points were Rangers’.

The protests at Parkhead yesterday are just how easy Celtic have had it for nearly 20 years. To be absolutely thumped at home by Rangers was the straw they couldn’t take.

Because Danny Rohl achievement was a Walter-esque triumph. We are in no way comparing the managers, but Rohl did something only Walter had.

No wonder he feels pretty good now.
