The winter transfer window has slammed shut but there’s still room for deals to be done. Free agents can sign for new clubs outside the transfer period and there are some big names unattached and available.

We’ve looked at five free agents who could appeal to clubs.

Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos remains on the lookout for a new club after leaving Sevilla in the summer. The 38-year-old made 37 appearances for his boyhood side last season and scored seven goals, but has been without a club since June.

Despite discussions with clubs in the Saudi Pro League and Brazil, Ramos is still a free agent. One of the great defenders of his generation, the Spanish centre-back is in the twilight of an illustrious career but remains an intriguing option for sides in search of leadership. He has been linked with Mexican outfit Monterrey in recent days.

Serge Aurier

Serge Aurier is another familiar face who has failed to find a new club this season. The Ivorian has been a free agent since ending a brief stint at Galatasaray, where he won the Turkish Süper Lig last season. Still just 32, Aurier could be a shrewd signing for sides in search of defensive depth, having won league titles in France and Turkey, alongside African Cup of Nations triumphs in 2015 and 2023.

He made 113 appearances in the Premier League during spells at Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

Jason Denayer

Former Celtic defender Jason Denayer became a free agent after leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Fateh last month.

Denayer, who won the Scottish Premiership at Celtic and was named PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year in 2014/15, departed Al-Fateh by mutual consent. His exit came amid an injury that is set to sideline the 29-year-old for five weeks, with the bottom-of-the-table Saudi side eager to free up a foreign player spot to sign a replacement.

The 35-cap Belgium international has also had spells at Sunderland, Lyon and Galatasaray.

Maximiliano Gomez

Maximiliano Gomez’s career has failed to hit the heights expected after an exciting emergence at Celta Vigo. The forward scored 30 goals across two La Liga seasons with Celta, before four seasons spent with Valencia.

Gomez has been without a club since the summer but, at just 28, still has time to reignite his career. The Uruguay international boasts a record of 52 goals in 198 career appearances in Spain’s top division.

Ryan Kent

Fenerbahce announced Ryan Kent’s contract had been terminated by mutual agreement in October after the winger failed to break into the plans of new manager Jose Mourinho.

Kent signed for Fenerbahce from Rangers on a free transfer in 2023 but scored just once in 19 appearances for the Istanbul outfit. Previously, he starred in Scotland and was named PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year in 2018/19. He was a key part of the Rangers team that won the title in 2020/21 and reached the Europa League final the following season.

Kent is reported to be close to a move to Iranian club Persepolis. The country’s laws on allowing crocodiles to be kept as pets is understood to be a factor. Not something we had on our bingo cards this year.
