Sunderland and Newcastle United renew hostilities this weekend, with fresh chapters ready to be written in Wear and Tyne folklore. Sunderland Echo highlights five iconic derby moments that still resonate on both sides of the divide.

A goalless first leg at Roker Park set up a tense semi-final second leg on Tyneside, where Eric Gates and Marco Gabbiadini scored to book a Wembley date with Swindon Town.

On a storm-lashed night in 1999, Sunderland marked their Premier League return at St James's Park with a 2-1 win through Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn, a result that preceded the end of Ruud Gullit’s reign.

In November 2000, Newcastle had a last-minute penalty to avoid back-to-back home defeats to Sunderland, but Thomas Sorensen denied Alan Shearer to seal another 2-1 victory on Tyneside.

In October 2008, Sunderland ended a home hoodoo stretching back to April 1980 as Kieran Richardson’s thunderous free-kick beat Newcastle at the Stadium of Light, after Shola Ameobi had cancelled out Djibril Cisse’s opener.

Earlier this season, the rivals met in the Premier League for the first time in nine years, and Magpies record signing Nick Woltemade headed into his own net to hand Regis Le Bris’ side all three points at a raucous Stadium of Light.
