Sunderland and Newcastle United go head to head again this weekend as players aim to write themselves into Wear and Tyne folklore. According to Sunderland Echo, the Black Cats have had the upper hand in recent meetings, and here are five standout moments. Sunderland's attacking struggles were discussed after a cup loss.

A goalless first leg at Roker Park set up a nerve-shredding play-off semi-final return on Tyneside in 1990. Eric Gates and Marco Gabbiadini struck to seal victory and book a Wembley date with Swindon Town.

In 1999, Sunderland marked their Premier League return with a 2-1 win at a rain-soaked St James's Park. Kevin Phillips and Niall Quinn scored as Ruud Gullit’s reign came to an end.

In November 2000, a last-minute penalty offered Newcastle a chance to avoid a second successive St James's Park loss to Sunderland. Thomas Sorensen denied Alan Shearer from the spot to preserve a 2-1 away win.

October 2008 ended a long wait for a home derby win. After Shola Ameobi cancelled out Djibril Cisse’s opener, Kieran Richardson’s stunning free-kick delivered Sunderland’s first Stadium of Light victory over Newcastle since April 1980.

Earlier this season the derby returned to the Premier League for the first time in nine years. Magpies record signing Nick Woltemade scored an own goal to hand all three points to Regis Le Bris’ side at a raucous Stadium of Light.
