Flaco López has been called up by Argentina for the 2026 World Cup and says his Palmeiras future will be considered after the tournament. He heads to the finals as the club’s leading scorer with 14 goals, and is among those in the squad most likely to attract offers in the mid-year window.
According to Globo.com, Argentina named him minutes before Thursday’s win over Junior Barranquilla, and he learned of the call-up during the on-field interview afterwards.
López said his priority is to keep enjoying his football and that his focus is on joining up with the national team. After the World Cup, he added, he will see what is best for his future and for Palmeiras, whether that is staying or moving, with enjoyment his only aim.
He stressed he is very happy at the club and that the World Cup is all he can think about for now, adding they will see what Palmeiras have planned for him after the tournament.
Head coach Abel Ferreira said he already knew about the call-up, noting the staff speak with national team coaches. He indicated Giay was a possibility but they expected Flaco to be selected, and he joked that Flaco’s first team is Palmeiras and he must perform there to earn international recognition.
López is under contract with Palmeiras until December 2029, and despite his market value the club do not intend to negotiate his departure at this time.
