Flamengo said in a statement that Uruguay were irresponsible over Arrascaeta’s rehabilitation from a fractured clavicle in May, adding that recovery protocols were ignored.

The club’s medical department had sent a document outlining the timetable, activity progression and required protocols. The note said that failing to follow scientific guidance put the player’s health at risk and disregarded the club’s investment.

Arrascaeta is now recovering from a calf injury that almost led to his omission from the World Cup by Uruguay.

Flamengo have integrated physiotherapist Laniyan Neves into Uruguay’s staff for the tournament. He treats Arrascaeta at the club and privately.

The club stayed in contact with Uruguay throughout qualifiers and friendlies to monitor the work with their players, particularly given strict load control for Arrascaeta and De la Cruz. Club involvement is not new, with the physiotherapist previously called for specific cases, including to treat the No 18.
