Flamengo have decided to keep Luiz Araújo, resisting approaches from abroad and at home. According to Globo.com, Cruz Azul made the forward a priority before the Mexican transfer window closes on Monday, but the club refused to negotiate.
Cruz Azul’s proposal did not come close to changing Flamengo’s stance. The Mexican side were not in a position to make a significant investment for the attacker they need.
Cruzeiro have also coveted Luiz Araújo since last year. In 2026 they sounded out a deal while Flamengo pursued Kaio Jorge, but the board did not contemplate letting him go.
He is not an automatic starter, yet coach Filipe Luís considers him important. In 2025 he delivered 13 goals and 10 assists in 68 official matches, the most games and goals of his career. His last Flamengo goal came in a rout of Sport in November 2025.
Luiz Araújo has played two matches in 2026 and missed three, against São Paulo, Inter and Sampaio Corrêa, due to pain in his right thigh. He is currently receiving treatment and is a doubt for Tuesday’s match against Vitória.
