Flamengo are weighing Fábio Luciano and Edu Gaspar as potential replacements for football chief José Boto. ESPN reports that president Luiz Eduardo Baptista is assessing both candidates. Boto, who has lost backing in the dressing room, is likely to be dismissed soon.
Former Flamengo centre-back Fábio Luciano has been proposed, and Bap is studying it. He has never held the role, but his captaincy from 2007 to 2009, when he handled crises and had the squad’s backing, counts in his favour.
The other candidate is Edu Gaspar. He has served as an executive at Arsenal and the Brazil national team, and is currently at Nottingham Forest. He is in the process of ending his contract.
Boto’s standing has deteriorated since last year. Frictions over Arrascaeta’s renewal, issues around De La Cruz and the handling of Filipe Luís’s dismissal widened the gap with the squad.
As with Filipe Luís, whose exit was finalised only after agreement with Leonardo Jardim, Flamengo will dismiss Boto only after deciding on a successor. Bap has yet to choose between one or two professionals, aiming to pair a dressing-room profile with an executive one.
On Thursday, five March, Boto opened Jardim’s unveiling and took responsibility for Filipe Luís’s sacking in the early hours of Tuesday, three March. He said he was tasked with diagnosing problems and proposing solutions, recommended the change and the president approved it. He added that reasons would not be disclosed and praised Filipe’s work and future.
