Hansi Flick struck a focused and confident tone as Barcelona gear up for a defining Champions League encounter against Newcastle United.

With the first leg ending 1-1, everything is still on the line. However, Barcelona will take encouragement from playing at home, where the atmosphere could prove decisive.

Flick, though, made it clear that sentiment alone will not be enough — tactical precision will be key.

“They’ll play man-to-man defence. It’ll be tough. They’re a physical team that plays man-to-man, and they’re dangerous on the fast break.

“We need to play a perfect game, and we’ll try to do just that,” analysed the German.

On Joan Laporta

Before turning fully to the match, Flick was asked about the influence of Joan Laporta and the message he received when he first arrived at the club.

Reflecting on that moment, Flick said, “A lot about Barcelona. The role of Johan Cruyff, the man who created the new Barça

“Also, the philosophy, the way of playing—it’s not just about winning, it’s about the way. About passion, the right mindset, but also enjoying it. This is what we want to show tomorrow.”

Laporta’s recent visit to the squad also came up during the press conference.

“I said it before: it’s important to have a structure, and that provides stability. I’m happy he came and spoke with the team. He wished us good luck for tomorrow.”

As expected, questions about his contract situation followed, but Flick was quick to shift the focus back to football.

“It’s not the right time to talk about this. We have a very important match tomorrow.

“But everyone knows I’m very happy here. We have time to talk about it, but right now isn’t the right time.”

Expanding on his feelings about life in Barcelona, he added, “It’s clear that I love working here.

“I have a fantastic family, a great staff, and I feel everyone’s support in Barcelona, but at the end of the day, it’s football.

“I try to give my best for my team and help them reach their highest level. I’m not thinking about going anywhere else. I’m here, and I’m very happy.”

On Lamine Yamal

On the pitch, Flick provided an update on Lamine Yamal, highlighting his importance after benching him against Sevilla.

“He’s fine. He’s the player who can make a difference. He trained fantastically yesterday. The team did too. Today as well.

“The Champions League is one of the best competitions; everyone wants to play there, and it’s an extra motivation for the players.”

Tactically, the manager emphasised the need for sharper execution, especially against Newcastle’s pressing system.

“We’ve talked about that. We need to do better. We have to play with conviction. It’s important for tomorrow when they start marking us man-to-man. Finding the open space.”

Champions League ambition

Flick also did not shy away from addressing Barcelona’s ambitions in the competition. “We have to stay positive.

“There’s a lot of quality in the team, and I believe we’re capable of winning this Champions League. We need to improve.

“Right now, the important thing is that everyone is available and at their best. That’s the most important thing looking ahead to next month.”

When discussing attacking options, he hinted at tactical flexibility, including the possibility of Dani Olmo playing a different role.

“It could be an option. In games like these, all the players are motivated. We need Ferran and Lewy to be at their best until the end of the season to achieve our goals. It’s crucial for us.”

A lighter moment came when Flick was asked about his unusual habit during penalty kicks.

“No (laughs). I watch the replay on Sorg’s tablet. I’d rather not watch them. It’s amazing to see the fans celebrating them.”

Finally, Flick briefly touched on the other major Champions League tie involving Real Madrid and Manchester City, acknowledging the unpredictability of the competition.

“Real Madrid played fantastically. In football, anything is possible. I’ll watch it from the couch and try to enjoy every moment,” he concluded.
