Matty Young has joined Huddersfield Town on loan, giving the Sunderland goalkeeper his first taste of League One football. According to Sunderland Echo, the 19-year-old’s move has been completed.
Young made well over 50 senior appearances across two seasons with Salford City. He narrowly missed promotion last term, with Salford denied on the final day then beaten in the play-offs by Notts County.
Shortly before the play-off final, he signed a new long-term contract on Wearside to keep him at the club until summer 2030. A youth international, he is regarded as one of the academy’s standout prospects.
Sunderland director of football Florent Ghisolfi described the step up as a crucial stage in Young’s development and praised the goalkeeping department for its role. He said the club are eager to follow his progress at Huddersfield and wished both parties well for 2026/27.
Huddersfield director of football Chris Markham thanked Sunderland for their trust and said Young arrives early to settle with his new team-mates. He pointed to the teenager’s notable experience for his age, strong all-round goalkeeping profile and presence, and hopes the move continues a pathway for young Premier League talent in West Yorkshire.
Huddersfield Town boss Martin Drury said Young’s qualities and character matched their requirements and that the player was keen to come. He added that Young will work closely with head of goalkeeping Chris Elliott at Canalside to make a positive contribution next season.
