As one of football’s largest and most historic institutions, Real Madrid always worry about the perception of the club and the image projected to any viewing it from the outside.
The results, on that front, are crucial for they largely define the club’s image. Even in a season where matters are not going their way, there is thus little room for a continued poor run of form.
Given the club’s history in the competition, the UEFA Champions League is crucial for Real Madrid every year and it is a given that they are perennially unsaid favourites.
As relayed in a recent report by The Athletic, Florentino Perez and his board are placing a lot of emphasis on how the team perform in the premier competition this season, especially in the coming round.

Given the team’s relatively poor form all season, they understand that the chance of them going all the way is very minimal.
After all, they face Manchester City in the Round of 16, potentially Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals and PSG in the semifinals. The eventual finals could be against Arsenal or Barcelona, in all likelihood.
For that reason, Perez and Co. are paying extra emphasis on the coming matchup against Manchester City and see that one result to be critical for them and the club.
Should Real Madrid take the win over Pep Guardiola’s side, it would salvage the club’s image and reputation in the competition. A defeat in the Round of 16, however, would reflect poorly.
With the second leg scheduled in England, Real Madrid will not have it easy against the Blues. The first leg later week, thus, will be crucial.
