In recent weeks, it’s been reported that Real Madrid are interested in signing a new midfielder this summer. Enzo Fernandez has been ruled out due to Chelsea’s high asking price, and this could see the club pivot back towards Rodri Hernandez, whom they have been linked with over the last 12 months.
Rodri is a player that Real Madrid appreciate a lot, and with his Manchester City due to expire next summer, there is every chance that he can be signed for lower than his market value. He would represent a major signing for Los Blancos, and it would allow Jose Mourinho’s request for a new midfielder to be fullfiled.
However, Sport have reported that Rodri will no longer be considered as a transfer target by Real Madrid – or rather, by president Florentino Perez, who wants to “take revenge” against the Spain international for being one of the players that rival Enrique Riquelme promised to sign if he won last month’s election.
Furthermore, Perez is said to have reservations about Rodri’s physical condition on the back of him tearing his ACL in the last two years, although it is claimed that the primary reason for his possible signing being discarded is the link with Riquelme.
It must be remembered that Rodri was not the only player that Riquelme promised to sign if he defeated Perez in the presidential election. He also claimed that an agreement had been reached with Erling Haaland, but for now, there is no indication that Perez will also discard the option of the Norwegian striker – and he almost certainly will not, given that he’s a player that Real Madrid have had on their radar for several years.
It remains to be seen whether Real Madrid end up signing a midfielder this summer, but if so, it looks like Rodri won’t be the one.
