Real Madrid’s 4-2 defeat at Benfica prompted a forceful response from Florentino Pérez. According to Cadena SER, the president confronted senior figures in the dressing room after the game.

Madrid had arrived at the Estádio da Luz occupying a place that ensured direct progress to the Champions League last 16 and were targeting a top eight finish. The loss means a play-off against Bodo Glimt or possibly Benfica again, a scenario that did not sit well with the club chief.

Pérez is said to have addressed five players, unhappy with their attitude and behaviour, and felt compelled to intervene. He focused in particular on Jude Bellingham, telling the England international ‘to become’ the team’s leader after he did not assume that role on the night.

The backdrop is a difficult situation at the club. Xabi Alonso was sacked after poor results, and successor Arbeloa has yet to convince he can change the course of events, intensifying debate about his prospects for next season.

There was said to be concern over the team’s overall application and level of play, with Madrid without a major trophy since 2023/24, when they won the Champions League. Pérez made clear what he expects from the squad and expressed his dissatisfaction.
