According to Record, Florentino Pérez will do everything to ensure the Real Madrid v Benfica return leg proceeds with normality at the Santiago Bernabéu, and the episode is not seen as damaging relations between the clubs.
Tuesday’s Benfica v Real Madrid match was halted after a confrontation between Vinícius Júnior and Gianluca Prestianni, with images replayed widely from Spain to Argentina. UEFA is investigating after Vinícius accused the Benfica player of racist insults, and both sides are defending their positions.
Despite clear displeasure within the squad and structure, Real Madrid are not generalising. Vinícius and team-mates view it as a reprehensible act by one player. The Brazil international does not compare it to past racist abuse he has endured in Spain from an entire stand.
There is no revolt against Benfica. The Spanish club did not expect a different response from the Estádio da Luz side, who have publicly backed Prestianni. Real Madrid understand that stance and now await UEFA’s analysis of all available material.
Benfica visit Madrid on 25 February at 20:00 at the Santiago Bernabéu. The tie will decide passage to the last 16 of Europe’s leading club competition. The match will be televised on Sport TV5.
