Germany star to jet in and finalise British record transfer from Bayer Leverkusen after post-Nations League holiday
The Germany forward could become the most expensive signing in the history of British football after last week a mammoth deal was struck with Bayer Leverkusen following weeks of negotiations worth a guaranteed £100million up front plus a potential further £16m in add-ons.
If those bonus are met, the £116m deal would eclipse the £115m Chelsea paid to sign Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton two summers ago.
Wirtz’s move to Liverpool has been delayed despite an agreement finally being reached with Leverkusen, with the 22-year-old having been on vacation since playing and scoring for Germany in the Nations League finals on home soil, where they lost in the last four to eventual champions Portugal before then being beaten to third place by France.
Earlier this week, Jeremie Frimpong - Wirtz’s former Leverkusen team-mate who has already completed his own £29.5m switch to Anfield this summer - posted a picture of the duo seemingly holidaying together.
However, that break is now over, with widespread reports that Liverpool’s new club-record signing will officially arrive on Merseyside on Thursday in order to undergo the first part of a medical that will be completed on Friday.
Wirtz will also officially sign what is expected to be a five-year contract until 2030 that Fabrizio Romano says is worth approximately £200,000 a week amid some reports elsewhere of a much higher salary, with Liverpool then to officially unveil what is technically their fourth summer arrival already after Frimpong and goalkeepers Giorgi Mamardashvili and Armin Pecsi.
The busy Premier League champions are also expected to clinch the signing of Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez next week for a fee in the region of £45m, while some reports have even claimed they are plotting another British transfer record deal for Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Reports in France claim that Liverpool are also rivalling Chelsea for the signing of Lyon’s Belgian international winger Malick Fofana, who also has interest from Manchester United.
More outgoings are also likely at Anfield this summer, with Alisson Becker’s long-time goalkeeping understudy Caoimhin Kelleher already having moved to Brentford in an £18m deal to follow Trent Alexander-Arnold’s early £10m switch to Real Madrid ahead of the Club World Cup.
Andy Robertson has been linked with Atletico Madrid amid the imminent arrival of Kerkez, while Luis Diaz is on the radar of both Barcelona and Al-Nassr, and Darwin Nunez and Federico Chiesa could both move on ahead of next season.
