Borussia Dortmund suffered their first 2025/26 Champions League defeat on Wednesday, losing 4-1 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

After testing Gregor Kobel a few times in the opening stages, Phil Foden broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute. The Manchester City attacker was given too much space at the edge of the area and made no mistake, placing a low shot out of Kobel's reach.

City immediately pushed for a second goal and came close when Erling Haaland made a powerful run into the box and found Nico O'Reilly, whose effort from close range was kept out by Kobel in the 27th minute.

But just a minute later, Haaland doubled the lead, powering home a finish after Jeremy Doku’s low cross reached the Norwegian striker in the back of the area.

Dortmund offered little threat in the first half, but were given a glimmer of hope when Karim Adeyemi’s shot was flicked away by Gianluigi Donnarumma just before the break.

In the second half, Manchester City appeared to put the game beyond doubt in the 56th minute, when Foden received the ball from Reijnders and put it into the corner to make it 3-0.

Dortmund responded in the 72nd minute, though, pulling one back through Waldemar Anton, who smashed a near-post finish after a cross from Julian Ryerson.

Dortmund pressed for more after the goal, creating a few chances, but it was too late to mount a comeback, and City sealed the win when Rayan Cherki made it 4-1 late on.

The defeat leaves Dortmund on seven points from four games in the Champions League.
