Folarin Balogun sent off for United States, suspended for Belgium World Cup last 16

Folarin Balogun scored then saw red as the United States faced Bosnia-Herzegovina in the World Cup round of 32. He will be suspended for the last 16 against Belgium, scheduled in Seattle at 2am on the night from Monday to Tuesday.

The AS Monaco striker had earlier found the net, but in the 64th minute he recklessly stamped on Tarik Muharemovi’s Achilles, twisting the defender’s ankle.

After a VAR review, Brazilian referee Raphael Claus showed a straight red.

It was the USA’s first World Cup dismissal in 20 years, the last coming for Pablo Mastroeni and Eddie Pope against Italy in 2006, the eventual champions. Balogun has three goals at this tournament, and his absence is a major blow for Mauricio Pochettino and Team USA.
