AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca has spoken about his decision to leave Rafael Leao out of the starting line-up again for the game against Monza.
Tuesday’s defeat to Napoli leaves Milan 11 points off the league leaders heading into November, meaning that the pressure is on to turn things around and at least try to remain in the Scudetto conversation.
The week has been dominated by negative headlines though, such as the apparent breakdown in relations between Leao and Fonseca, plus the suggestion that the coach only has a few games to save his job.
One way to silence the alarms would be to win against Monza tonight at the U-Power Stadium, a team that have largely struggled to begin the season under Alessandro Nesta and are languishing just above the drop zone.
Fonseca spoke to Sky moments before kick-off in tonight’s game and his comments were relayed by MilanNews.
It’s the consecutive game on the bench for Leao. What should he do now?
“I have to think not only about this match, we then have an important match against Real and I have to manage the team. I don’t want to go into details. Today I think this is the right team to play against Monza, also thinking about the match against Real Madrid.”

How is Leao training?
“I don’t want to go into details. As I’ve always said, it’s just a choice. If we think that when there’s a choice there’s a conflict… There are no conflicts.
“Then, as far as internal issues are concerned, I speak to the players in private, I don’t go into details. What’s important for me is to have a team ready to win against Monza.”
You need a victory…
“It is very important to win today. We know it is difficult but we must only think about winning. Also because the team is giving very positive signals. We want to add results to the growth.”
