From the 1920s to today, many have represented both Real Sociedad and Atlético Madrid. According to AS, the timeline runs from Marculeta to current Atlético defender Robin Le Normand.

Early switches from Real to Atlético included Marculeta, Peña Iriarte and Ipiña in the mid-1930s. Basabe left Atlético for Real in 1949-50, and Pérez Payá moved to Atlético in 1950 after a brief Real stint.

In the 1960s and 70s, Urtiaga played for Atlético from 1966 to 1968 then for Real until 1973, while Zubiarrain went Real 1966-68 then Atlético 1968-72. Later, López Ufarte, Uralde and Elduayen all made the Real-to-Atlético move in 1986-88.

In the 1990s and 2000s, Luis García featured for Atlético in 1992-94 before six months at Real in 1994-95. Juan Gómez left Real in 2000 for three seasons at Atlético. Álvaro Novo moved from Atlético to Real in 2005, and Diego Rivas had Atlético in 2003-04 with Real spells in 2006-07 and 2008-11.

Griezmann played five seasons at Real from 2009, then Atlético from 2014 to 2019 and since 1 September 2021. Theo Hernández had a first Atlético call-up in 2016-17 for a match against SD Eibar, then joined Real for 2018-19. Moyá went Atlético 2014-18, then Real 2018-21.

Germán Valera alternated Atlético’s B team and seniors from 2019 to 2021, then featured for Real and their B side in 2021-22. Javi Galán signed for Atlético in 2023, was loaned to Real in January 2024, finished the season there, then returned. Robin Le Normand joined Atlético in summer 2024 after 303 games for Real. Alexander Sørloth scored 24 in 90 for Real, then 26 in 41 for Villarreal, drawing Atlético interest.
