Fabio Capello has delivered a damning verdict on Inter Milan and the Champions League exit at the hands of Bodo/Glimt, accusing the Nerazzurri of lacking urgency and ambition across both legs of the playoff tie.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, via FCInter1908, the former AC Milan and Real Madrid coach pulled no punches in his assessment of Cristian Chivu’s side.

Capello argued that Inter’s prioritisation of the Serie A title effectively cost them in Europe.

Indeed, pointing to selection decisions in Norway and a flat, uninspired performance at San Siro in the second leg.

He was also critical of the reaction in the dressing room after elimination, or rather, the apparent lack of one.

“Against Bodo the team was held back,” he said.

“In Norway, Chivu didn’t play with his best players with one eye on the league. In the return leg, you saw a team with the handbrake on.”

Capello then turned his attention to the mood after the defeat.

“After the elimination I didn’t see any anger from the players. Did you hear Barella‘s comments? He talked about the Scudetto target. He was the captain!”

The legendary coach made clear his belief that Inter had the squad to compete on all fronts.

“The negative signal has been sent,” he said.

“Everyone expected much more. Instead, nothing, everyone happy about the Scudetto being close.”

On Chivu’s role in proceedings, Capello was measured but pointed. “He is the driver, he makes the choices. I only say that Inter had a squad capable of fighting in all competitions.”
